Udaipur, 22 July 2026: With the objective of ensuring prompt and effective relief and rescue operations during possible tunnel accidents, establishing better coordination among various agencies, and assessing the preparedness of the disaster response mechanism, a comprehensive joint mock drill was conducted at Chirva Tunnel by teams of the NDRF, SDRF and Civil Defence.
During the mock drill, a hypothetical emergency situation involving a tunnel accident was created. Through this exercise, the preparedness, procedures, availability of resources and rapid response capabilities of various agencies were tested to minimize possible loss of life and damage.
In the first phase of the exercise, the concerned teams conducted a detailed inspection of the incident site and assessed the situation. Subsequently, a relief and rescue operation was launched to safely evacuate people trapped under debris inside the tunnel. The teams carried out prompt and effective operations in coordination with each other and practiced completing the rescue operation in the shortest possible time. During the mock drill, the Police Department and other concerned departments also played an active role. The police practiced traffic management, securing and maintaining order at the incident site, and ensuring smooth movement of the relief and rescue teams. Officers and personnel from various departments demonstrated the conduct of relief operations at the site with better coordination.
The main objective of this joint exercise was to further strengthen coordination and communication systems among various departments and agencies, enhance rapid response capabilities during disasters, and strengthen an effective and well-organized relief and rescue mechanism. The mock drill also provided an opportunity to identify potential challenges during a disaster situation and take necessary corrective measures. Such joint exercises play an important role in ensuring timely, coordinated and effective action during any actual disaster or emergency situation in the future.
